American English ESL Resources and communication strategies
digital media literacy and Boston transcription

An American English Mindset

With a graduate degree in Applied Linguistics, and an undergraduate education in English, Sociology, and Psychology, I have spent the last ten years studying and researching language— especially the English language— from a multitude of perspectives: as a mental/cognitive phenomenon; as a social and cultural phenomenon; as a vehicle for, and topic of, education; as historical artifact, and as the single most excellent product to have emerged with the evolution of the species.

Communicating, Educating, and Creating

I bring to every new project a record of professional experience that has, over the past decade, helped me to acquire a range of practical skills, which, today, allow me to work as an American English language strategist. For example, I have served as a linguistics consultant, as a teacher of linguistics, composition, and English as a Second Language to college students and adults, as a transcriber of spoken American English, as a writer and editor of all manner of media, from traditional print media to modern digital media, as a producer of spoken-English media, and as a creator of digital media, including websites. I primarily work in and around Boston, Massachusetts, but have worked with clients inside and outside the United States.

To my past, current, and potential clients, to my students, and to those who are simply curious as to what an American English language strategist does, I encourage you to take a look around this site. Please feel free to contact me for any reason. Finally, to all of those people who continue to inspire me, to teach me, and to support me...THANK YOU!

P.S. I'm so happy to announce my marriage on December 12, 2009, to Jieun "Jina" Park. She's not only the greatest person I ever met, but she's also the person most likely to put up with me as I get older!

Coming Soon...

Here are a few projects I'm working on relating to language-learning and linguistics:

  1. The ESL Media List—— As a teacher, I am quite often asked by students to recommend good books or movies that might be useful for language-learning. Regrettably, I don't always have a great answer to this question. Consequently, I have realized that the best recommendations are going to come from students— truly, the experts in this case. In the next few weeks, I will create an interactive form that will allow language-learners to share with others their opinions on books, magazines, movies, websites and video-games, all of which can be amazing sources of information for students.
  2. LanguageRights.net Public Forum—— I'm working on launching a public forum/website focused solely on issues of language rights and policies in America and abroad. I will be encouraging any interested individual to submit a personal narrative, an essay, an opinion, links, resources, and any other relevant information to this site. It is my hope that this important topic can be explored collectively on the web and that the change can be made to the current policies of the U.S. as the relate to language.
  3. Language-Learning Wiki Page——I'm working on creating an interactive language learning Wiki (as in Wikipedia); this service will capitalize on recent language learning theories and, of course, the elegant design of WikiMedia to create a more useful language learning resource.
